‘First Impressions Matter’… and here at Lumi Agency, we think first impressions are especially important when it comes to new team members joining the Lumi family. After all, they are the ones that make the magic happen day in and day out, and we want them to know right from the start, that we genuinely appreciate them being a part of what we do.
By making new hires feel welcome and valued from their very first day, we believe that they will feel confident and empowered to dive right into their new role and make a positive impact. Every company has their own method of welcoming new team members, and while I don’t want to give away all of our secrets, I will tell you that we love making new hires feel like they aren’t the ‘new guy’, but rather our long lost cousin wandering into a family reunion.
Here are 4 simple steps we take at Lumi to welcome new hires:
- Once a new hire accepts a position here, we send a welcome email that questions super serious items (wink, wink), like their favorite snacks, playlist and hobbies. This way, we can custom craft their first day with all of their favorite items – so they can feel right at home.
- Prior to their first day, we send out an email that gives all of the information a new employee could need about their first day (where to park, who to meet, an agenda for their first day, etc.) to eliminate as much anxiety as we can about starting at a new office.
- On their first day, we always set up a new hire’s desk with all of the tools, swag and goodies that they need to get off to a great start and make them feel extra special.
- During a new hire’s first week, we do a few things to ensure they are getting to know their team, including a social event such as a team lunch or happy hour, as well as dedicated one-on-one time with each member of the team so they can understand everyone’s roles, responsibilities and personalities.
It’s apparent that we aren’t the only ones out there who are committed to making employees feel welcome in a clever way. Here are a few of our favorite welcome ideas that other companies are doing to make their employees feel right at home:
Saatchi & Saatchi Wellness
Can you say ‘Namaste’? Saatchi & Saatchi Wellness gives new employees a grab bag with fun goodies, including this coloring book with drawings from local hot spots near their office. When new employees feel the pressure from their newly acquired role & responsibilities, they can easily take a break from work and blow off some steam by getting lost in this coloring book.
New hires at Dropbox receive a special delivery to their home. When each new employee opens the beautifully designed box, he/she will find a cupcake kit inside, representing the image of a smiling cupcake that is one of Dropbox’s core values. Why? Because Dropbox knows that life is too short to be taken too seriously. This on-boarding ritual reflects Dropbox’s fun nature and is a great way to send positive vibes to new employees before their first day.
Havas Worldwide Chicago
Havas Worldwide Chicago provides new employees with “a swag bag” filled with a company t-shirt, notebooks, a water bottle, a coffee thermos, and headphones. Not only does Havas Worldwide Chicago provide their new employees with all of the essentials, but also encourages them to ‘better together‘, right from the start.
This welcome package from FanDuel includes an company-embroidered hoodie, a Patagonia quarter-zip, stationery, stress balls, a wireless keyboard, a wireless mouse, and — a MacBook Pro. Not too shabby…
